The SEEDS Master Course has been a good opportunity to learn the basis
of Space System Engineering and to increase my technical skill in the
other space disciplines. During the Project Work I learned the meaning
of team work and I had the chance to collaborate with space industries
experts in three different locations: Toulouse, Bremen and Torino,
three poles of aerospace industry. The European environment gave me the
possibility to know the different ways to approach a problem in the
different countries. The master was a great experience and gave me the
possibility to increase my professional experience in the space system
engineering.
Now I’m pursuing a six-month internship at Thales Alenia Space in
Torino, in which I collaborate with a research program coordination
team.

SEEDS has been an extremely positive experience for my personal and
professional development. Its multidisciplinary approach to space
engineering provides a great deal of information on every
aspect of this fascinating topic. Specific attention is given to system
engineering methodologies,
a key element for the success of any complex engineering project. An
additional qualifying feature
of this master is its well conceived international dimension. The
project work, which is the very core of the overall SEEDS experience,
takes place in Toulouse, Bremen and Turin with the support of local
universities and industries. This allows participants to experience
different and somewhat complementary approaches to aerospace
engineering, to better understand the multicultural environment that
characterizes the European space industry and to extensively practice
their English. A travel through Europe which is both instructive and
entertaining.
At the moment I am doing a 6-month internship in Thales Alenia Space
(Torino) as deputy system engineer for a feasibility study related to
an experimental re-entry vehicle.

After graduating in Astronautic Engineering at the School of Aerospace
Engineering to the University “La Sapienza” of Rome, I decided to enjoy
in the international master SEEDS for the chance to go further into the
field of the human space exploration. The master has been an
extraordinary experience of life and work in an international
environment. The internationality of this project (France, Germany and
Italy), in fact, was a very interesting point in terms of ways of
working, cultures and space activities (industries, universities and
research centers). The project work activities in Toulouse, Bremen and
Torino gave me also the possibility to increase my personal background,
to learn a lot about the different approach to solve the problems, to
acquire team working methodologies, and to work under pressure with
efficiency in time management and prioritizing tasks.
In the end, it is also important to highlight the possibility to know a
lot of interesting people who are working in the space sector and not,
and the opportunity to increase my background not only from the
technical and knowledge point of view, but also concerning social and
organizer skills.
I am currently doing an internship at the Thales Alenia Space, started
after the end of the master, and in particular I’m working in the space
environment and habitats sector related to the future human exploration
missions.

I graduated in Mechanical Engineering at “Università degli Studi di
Catania” in 2006. In my opinion the best apects of Master SEEDS are:
- the opportunity both to create a theoretical
background and to perform the feasibility study of a very complex
system;
- work in team in an international environment;
- the possibility to meet very experienced
engineers;
- the possibility to partecipate to congresses to
present the results of the Project Work.
Now I’m working in Thales Alenia Space Italia and I’m involved in the
fracture analysis of the Commercial Orbital Transportation System
(COTS) of NASA program.

The Master SEEDS has been really a great experience for me. As an
Aerospace Engineer, being part of SEEDS was an opportunity to be
introduced into the space field, studying subjects and working on
projects that always have fascinated me. Personally, I think that the
key points of the Master are:
- The strong presence of the major European Space
Industries which put students in contact with very high qualified
engineers;
- The constant tutors support during all the
project work phases in Turin, Toulouse and Bremen;
- The capability to really teach us how to work
in a team respecting the tight schedule time.
After the master SEEDS, I have worked for Thales Alenia Space as Stress
Engineer for one year. I have been involved in the Optimization of the
Ultra Light Pressurized Vessels for the SPACEBUS Satellites and I have
performed Static analysis for a pressurized propellant tank within the
ALPHABUS Satellites.
I have also worked on Static and Modal analysis of the Grapple Fixture
structure of the Node 3 and on the Pressurized Logistics Module (PLM).
At the moment I am working for Airbus Deutschland in Hamburg. My
activities include Static and Fatigue analysis for the aircraft A-330.

After graduating in general engineering at ECAM Lyon (Engineering
school, Lyon, France) and after a specialisation in aerospace at
SUPAERO (Aeronautic and aerospace school, Toulouse, France) I decided
to join the SEEDS project work.
The Project Work of this master in space exploration has been a great
opportunity for me to get some experience in space programmes design.
The internationality of this project (France, Germany and Italy) was as
well a very interesting point in terms of ways of working (which are
very different from a country to another). At the end of the project,
the team had a very efficient work methodology in which we used the
strong aspects of management and work methods of each country. The
technical knowledge acquired was also another major advantage of this
master course.
Today, I am working as a consultant for ALTEN (one of the many sponsors
of the SEEDS master course).
In October 2008, we (the SEEDS II team) will have the pleasure to
present the results of our work at the congress of the International
Astronautical Federation in Glasgow. |

After graduating in Telecommunication Engineering at “Politecnico di
Torino” in January 2006 and after working as software developer in
Madrid, I applied for SEEDS 2006/7 because I was strongly motivated to
take this unique opportunity to develop my professional career in the
Space exploration sector.
SEEDS Master really represented for me an excellent opportunity to
learn fundamental and advanced space system engineering concepts: the
most important features of this course are, in my opinion, the variety
and the completeness of topics considered during the lessons, and the
possibility to practice them in a multinational team during the Project
Work.
Currently I am employed by “Altran Italia” as consultant in Thales
Alenia Space in Torino. I am working in the frame of the
Herschel-Planck program, an ESA scientific mission of primary
importance for the solar system exploration and for the understanding
of the origin of the Universe.
My main tasks are to develop and to maintain the EGSE – Electrical
Ground Support Equipment during the Planck environmental test campaign.
The system engineering approach acquired during the master gave me the
possibility to handle the complexity and the consistent amount of
technical aspects involved in the relationship between ground segment
and on-board systems.
The capability of working in a international environment is an
extremely important aspect as well, as actually I am performing my
tasks in close cooperation with a team constituted by people coming
from several European countries and USA. |

My name is Alessandro Rapisarda, I am an Electronic Engineer. For me
Master Seeds has been a key to the Space business. The lectures have
given me the possibility to understand the problematic related to this
peculiar engineering branch, giving me the possibility to integrate
with the colleagues during my internship in Thales Alenia Space (just
after the end of the master).
In
my opinion the best aspect of the Master is the team work experience.
To be forced to leave and work together with other colleagues with
different cultural background, but with the same target, in a very high
stress environment is a real experience of life. |

As a perfect complement to the academic study, the SEEDS master has
provided a synthesis of what I was looking for: international team
working and cooperation in a friendly environment, understanding of
space industry procedures, insight in technical design and dialogue
with industrial experts. The master has been an important step forward
that allowed me to enter in the Space industry. At the moment, I'm
employed in Sofiter System Engineering as consultant for Thales Alenia
Space in Turin as CFD analysis support in pressurised modules for Space

In the summer of 2005, after graduating in Aerospace Engineering at the
University of Rome “La Sapienza”, I decided to join the International
Master in Space Exploration and Development System. From my point of
view the strong aspects of SEEDS are:
- The support of ESA and of the most important
European space companies
- The system approach to space matters one can
acquire
- The international experience one can gain in
France and Germany having a look to the local way of approaching space
matters
At present I am working in Taitus software company, which develops
software for the European Space Agency mainly in the field of Earth
Observation.
In July I will start my experience at ESA-ESTEC in the Netherlands,
where I have been selected as Young Graduate Trainee in the Future
Mission Division, in the Science, Applications and Future Technologies

SEEDS master gave me the basics knowledge about Space Systems
Engineering necessary to harness the most recent development lines
emerging in the space strategies of both the European Union and the
USA.
This experience enabled me to handle every kind of situation, to study
problems and provide adequate solutions. During the working stage
various by-products were also engendered, such as how to manage people,
resources and time. Moving around Europe made me become aware of the
realities of different work and the ways people from different
countries confront the same subject.
Now I’m employed for Sofiter System Engineering as Consultant at the
"Functional Architecture and Environment Unit" of Thales Alenia Space
Italia in Turin. I’m involved in a programme whose aims are the study
of radiation effects on humans and devices and Planetary Protection
issues in the perspective for deep space exploration. |
